Why are men and women separated in "sports" like bowling and pool where strength isn't necessary?
Q. Is there any reason other than tradition that the genders are divided in these games?

A. In PBA bowling, women are now allowed to compete. However, no woman has won any of the exemption spots on tour this season (Kelly Kulick was exempt for the 2006-07 season, winning a spot through PBA Tour Trials, but did not earn enough points to keep her exemption for another season). Furthermore, Liz Johnson actually won her way all the way to a TV appearance in the 2005 PBA Tour's Banquet Open, beating Wes Malott in a semifinal before losing to Tommy Jones in the championship match. She even won a PBA regional tournament that year, becoming the first woman to win a PBA tournament. Even with these women's bowling milestones, however, many of the women bowlers themselves are trying to drum up support for a revival of the PWBA Tour, which… [cont.]

Why doesn't Yahoo Answers has a Section of "Bodybuilding" in Sports, if its a sport?
Q.
Asked by - Sat Dec 31 23:18:19 2011 - Yahoo! Answers - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Most of the body building/weight training questions seem to be in the 'Diet & Fitness' category: You're right ... there IS no specific category for 'Bodybuilding' ... most such questions are posted in the above-mentioned section, or in a section particular to a specific sport for which weightlifting is a part of the fitness routine (football, for example).

How come all of the "popular well-known" sports teams are winning the championships now?
Q. Face it, whenever you hear the word "Yankees" most of us don't think of back in the day talking baout the blue coats; we think baseball. When we hear "Lakers" we think basketball; when we hear "Giants" we think football. These are by far the most popular teams for the sports and what are the odds of two of them winning their championships this year? I know the Giants didn't win but they won a few years ago. And the Lakers won last year too. Are they the most popular because they're clearly the better pick?

How to get into the "Sports Management" field for a career?
Q. Hi all, My name is Daniel and I am a highschool student interested in business and sports. Because of this, I was wondering what kinda careers are in the field of "sports management". I'm not talking about stuff like becoming a GM (general manager) of the Yankees or anything, just what kind of management jobs are there for big sports franchises, how difficult they are to get into, and what education is needed. Also, if you have any good information about sports marketing jobs for big franchises as well, I would love to hear them. Thanks
Asked by Daniel - Thu May 6 18:55:23 2010 - Other - Careers & Employment - 2 Answers - Comments

A. There are some college that offer this as a major, however the field is SUPER competitive and jobs are almost nonexistent. At a minimum, a GM wanna-be should have an MBA.

What is "sports continuous shooting" in digital cameras?
Q. I am trying to find a good camera and I came across a cheap factory refurbished Nikon and under the description it says it has "sports continuous shooting." Is this similar to fps?
Asked by - Sat Feb 19 14:34:07 2011 - Cameras - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Yes, sports continuous shooting is your Frames Per Second. It's a useful thing to have, an average FPS would be around 6, on high end cameras used for sports photography they'd have 10 FPS burst mode, and on entry level cameras they'd have about 3 FPS. If you're into sports, wildlife or even gig photography then a high FPS is a good thing to have.

What is the origin of the expression "The Goat" in sports?
Q. Often in sports if a particular player plays badly at critical times and loses the game for the team he is called "The Goat" (of the game). I've searched all over (including Yahoo answers) and couldn't find the origin of this expression or any reason for it. Does anyone have any idea where it came from?
Asked by Brett - Sat Jan 5 02:35:40 2008 - Quotations - 3 Answers - Comments

A. "Goat" is short for "scapegoat," the person who bears the sins of others. Scapegoats go back to the Old Testament book of Leviticus: 16:7 And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD [at] the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 16:8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat. 16:9 And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD'S lot fell, and offer him [for] a sin offering. 16:10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, [and] to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness. By dying in the wilderness, the scapegoat provided atonement for… [cont.]

for girls what does it mean the "equal skill to boys in many sports, esp. that dont rely on size and strength?
Q.
Asked by Claudine R - Sun May 16 18:18:01 2010 - Trivia - 2 Answers - Comments

A. It means that if a 'sport' does not require physical strength, like billiards, or ... bowling? then girls can do it as well as boys. However, few sports let girls and boys compete, because girls are SO much better than boys, until the boys become big enough, like age 12+ . Look at the world's records in an Almanac, and even Men's Downhill Skiing is faster than Women's.

The same is in german: I swim - Ich schwimme I participate of natation/swimming - Ich nehme am (an+dem) Schwimmen teil. I run - Ich renne I participate of a run - Ich nehme an (einem) Rennen teil.

What makes a sport manly? What are the "manliest" and the "wimpiest" sports and why?
Q. Doing a research project on sports, I need a list of the most masculine sports from "manliest" to "wimpiest." Needs to include: baseball, basketball, bowling, boxing, cross country/distance running, cycling, football, golf, hockey, soccer, sprinting/track and field, swimming, and tennis. Trying to figure out what makes a sport "manly" and why?
Asked by Dee - Sat May 1 18:39:05 2010 - Other - Sports - 1 Answers - Comments

A. First of all, you have to be tough to compete in any sport on a high level. I suppose the sports that have a lot of physical contact are considered "manly", although the ability to hit a golf ball150 yards within 5 ft. of the hole does not make you wimpy. All these sports require hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. If push comes to shove, I have to say the toughest athletes are in no particular order, football, boxing, and hockey due to the amount of abuse their bodies absorb. Fitness training is so important in sports today, even bowlers keep themselves in great shape, they know it will pay off and give them an edge in competition.

What is the origin of "the wave" at sports games?
Q. When I went to Angel games when I was little, we always did "the wave" and tried to get it around the entire stadium. I always thought it had to do with the Angels, that it was our trademark. Now that I am older, I see other people doing the same things in sports venues throughout the world. Well it could have started just with the Angels if every team does it, so where did it come from? Does anyone know where it started?
Asked by - Wed Feb 9 23:31:48 2011 - Baseball - 2 Answers - Comments

A. The exact origins are uncertain, but Wiki provides several opportunities. I'd heard about the Seattle one before, but there are other, plausible beginnings, one dating back to the 1950s. Check it out:
